Celebrating the old New Year

On 13th January pupils from years 3 & 4 were invited to take part in the "old" new year celebrations at Bluestone.

Traditionally, according to the ancient Julian calendar this was the beginning of the new year. When this date was changed by the introduction of the Gregorian calendar back in the 18th century, the residents of the Gwaun Valley chose to continue celebrating new year on the 13th January.

Families would visit neighbouring homes and the children would sing traditional Welsh songs to welcome the new year. The children were rewarded with sweets or money.
