Jane Batten's Visit
During the autumn term, the pupils of years 5 & 6 learned about micro-organisms. Microbiologist Jane Batten visited the class and spoke to the children about germs and the importance of cleanliness. Using paint and a few volunteers, she demonstrated how easily germs are spread. Jane also brought along some Petri dishes containing bacterial growth for the children to study under the microscope.
For further investigation, the children took swabs from various locations around the school and applied them to prepared Petri dishes before sealing them. This allowed the children to observe the growth of bacteria over a period of time and to discover the best conditions in which bacteria grow.
The children thoroughly enjoyed this gruesome activity and we would like to thank Jane for giving her time to enhance the children's learning.
